4renew those 1/2" to 3/4" drill bits and save  Jun 19, 2008
I am a hobbyist that likes to fabricate parts for my automotive interest as well as build shop equipment or other structures from mild steel. In doing so I use a lot of larger drills in the ½" to ¾" variety. If you have ever bought any of these you know how expensive they can get. After ruining some of them while building various projects it was getting expensive. I figured if I could save the cost of just a few drills then the drill doctor would pay for itself. I have not been disappointed and it has renewed those useless drills. The action used to sharpen the bit requires you to turn the bit by hand using a supplied "chuck" fixture that works with a jig to perform the angle at which the bit gets sharpened. This mating of the chuck and jig can allow you to wobble the bit while turning it by hand, however by using both hands I was easily able to control the movement to get good results. The actual jig probably wouldn't allow you to mess up the bit but it does seem a little less accurate than what it could be. It has a small compartment to catch the material from the bit while it's being sharpened but it is marginal at best due to how fine the waste material is. The other thing I notice was how loud it was. I used ear protection just because the wine of the high rpm motor had just the right pitch to be somewhat objectionable especially since you must turn the chuck a lot with larger bits. All this aside, the drill doctor was easy to set up and use. It has easily sharpened bits that would otherwise have been thrown away. They seem to cut well after sharpening them and now I can save some of the money I was using on new bits.

5Very easy to use  Jun 17, 2008
The big brown truck dropped off my 750x today. It took longer to open the packaging than it did to learn how to use the Drill Doctor. I'll never suffer with a dull bit ever again!

1The Doctor is Out  May 31, 2008
Wasn't pleased with the Drill Doctor at all. It sharpened the bits but after using them for about 1 minute they were just as dull as before sharpening.

Better results with my grinding wheel believe it or not.

5Does exactly what the Ads say. Who'da thunk it!  Apr 24, 2008
I was a bit concerned when I ordered this as I've heard too many stories about things "seen on TV." What a wonderful surprise this turned out to be. I sharpened some bits that seriously needed it, and they performed like new. Then I sharpened every bit I had, since I wasn't sure if they needed it or not, and I knew they were going to be "like new" when I was done. I put split points on some bits. In general I went crazy and offered the shop at my worksite (a large office building) the use of the machine.

Six months ago one of our office safes had a broken lock and the locksmith showed up and started to drill through the steel plate. I noticed a stack of carbide bits at his side and I offered the use of my Drill Doctor. He was aware of the product but hadn't used it. He was amazed how well the bits performed after I sharpened them. He had a 10x loupe with him and let me use it to work with the bits--I highly recommend keeping one of these near the Drill Doctor because it really did help me get the bits perfect. Instead of using 20 bits to drill through the safe we did it it 4, and it wasn't a question of the money. We did it in about an hour instead of the usual 4 hours because the Drill Doctor actually puts a sharper edge on carbide bits than you get from the factory--the reason is that almost all carbide bits are used to drill concrete rather than armor plating, and the sharpness of the bit is not as important when you drill concrete.

By the way, these devices were designed by a company that makes big-league professional sharpeners.

I recommend this without reserve.
